Interactive Focus

You can isolate various chart factors by selecting specific elements of your charts. This can be a very helpful learning and study tool to help focus attention on specific astrological factors.

To demonstrate, let’s start with this New Moon chart cast for:

March 2, 2022 @ 9:34:48 am
Portland, OR, USA

This is the default chart state, with nothing in focus. It is using the chart style which shows both sign boundaries and house cusp details.

Chart Point Focus

You can focus a chart point by clicking or tapping on it. The selected chart point and all of its associated data will display, but everything else in the chart will disappear.

Here is what is focused when you select a particular chart point:

  • The selected chart point
  • All chart points having a direct aspect with this chart point
  • The aspect lines connecting the selected chart point to its aspected chart points
  • All house numbers associated with the above mentioned chart points
  • (When applicable) The house cusp details for each house containing the above mentioned chart points
  • (When applicable) The sign boundaries containing the above mentioned chart points

Notice the Sun icon in the upper-left corner which indicates what element is currently in focus.

Remove Focus

Once a chart element is in focus, it remains selected until you intentionally remove its focus. In the sample images in this article, you will see a button with symbols in the upper-left corner near the chart which indicates what’s been selected. Click or tap this button to remove the focus and return the chart to its default state.

This allows you to zoom and pan the chart without losing focus, which is especially helpful on mobile devices.

Aspect Focus

You can focus on a specific aspect by clicking or tapping on the aspect symbol.

Here is what is focused when you select a particular aspect:

  • The aspect line and symbol
  • The two (2) chart points involved in the aspect
  • The relevant house numbers
  • (When applicable) The house cusp details for each of the chart points
  • (When applicable) The sign boundaries containing the chart points

In this example, the sextile between the Sun and Uranus was selected and is now in focus.

Midpoint Focus

You can focus on a specific midpoint by clicking or tapping on the midpoint dot. Note that you must first select one (1) or more midpoints for display first. See the Midpoints DataSheet for more information on working with midpoints.

Here is what is focused when you select a particular midpoint:

  • The midpoint dot
  • The two (2) chart points involved in the midpoint
  • The relevant house numbers
  • (When applicable) The house cusp details for each of the chart points
  • (When applicable) The sign boundaries containing the chart points

In this example, the Saturn-Uranus midpoint is selected and is now in focus.

Biwheels

All of the above focus selections also work in biwheels. LUNA will also calculate aspects between the chart wheels and focus on the relevant elements in each wheel, per the descriptions above.

In this example, the Sun in the outer wheel is selected, which focuses all of the relevant data between the two (2) charts.

FYI

When focusing on a chart point in a biwheel, you may notice that some aspect lines are dashed while others are solid. Aspects for the selected chart point within its own chart are solid. Aspects for the selected chart point to the other chart are dashed. LUNA refers to these dashed aspect lines as “interwheel aspects”. See Interwheel Aspects DataSheet for more details on biwheel aspects.
